Emmanuel Macron was elected France's youngest head
of state since Napoleon on Sunday night after trouncing
far-Right rival
Marine Le Pen in a result that will have
far-reaching consequences for Britain and Europe.
Initial results which was 65.1% to 34.9% gave 39-year-old Mr Macron almost two
thirds of the vote, showing a clear path to the Elysee
Palace for the pro-business, centrist Europhile who was a
political unknown until three years ago and has never
held elected office.
A serious-looking Mr Macron reached across the divide
to Le Pen voters: "A new page of our long history is
turned,” he said afterwards.
But he didn't shy away from his internationalist
agenda in which he promised to restore the lnks
between the EU and ordinary citizens.
