Migrant Offshore Aid Station, MOAS, an NGO for rescue operations in the
Mediterranean on Friday recovered the
body of a young man , who
witnesses say was shot dead by traffickers in Libya because he refused to
give them his baseball hat.
Regina Catrambone, who founded MOAS with her husband Christopher,
told Radio 1. Catrambone said the Phoenix ship was also taking 394 people
rescued from three boats to the Sicilian port of Catania.
"This is the way migrants are treated in Libya, and yet people tell
us that we should take them back there," the organizations said.
"Putting aside the fact that it is illegal to force asylum seekers to
return to a country where they are vulnerable to persecution, this
is not what humanity is about. We will not stand by while people
continue to be treated in this way and are forced to risk their lives
at sea as a result"
